“Eugene Onegin” in Kraków

Thursday, 2 December 2010
Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera, “Eugene Onegin”, will be premiered on 10 December at Kraków Opera.
The title role will be performed by Mariusz Kwiecień, a star of New York’s Metropolitan Opera and a soloist on international stages. The artist is also friends with the Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival, at which he performed on several occasions.
Prepared jointly with the Grand Theatre Opera in Poznań, the ABAO in Bilbao and the Teatro Argentino de La Plata, the production has an international team of performers and producers. It is directed by Michał Znaniecki, with Łukasz Borowicz as the music director. The stage set has been designed by Luigi Scoglio and Diana Theocharidis has prepared the choreography. Łukasz Borowicz is also well known to regular attendees of the Easter Festival. It has become a tradition of the Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival to present concert performances of forgotten operas by great composers. After Cherubini’s Lodoïska and Spohr’s Der Berggeist from previous years, this year we witnessed the Polish premiere of Carl Maria von Weber’s Euryanthe. All these performances were conducted by Łukasz Borowicz, who made a name as an artist not afraid to tackle unconventional repertoire.
