Beethoven Magazine during Avdeeva’s concert

Monday, 3 January 2011
On 4 January 2011, Yulianna Avdeeva, winner of the 16th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition will perform with the New York Philharmonic orchestra conducted by Alan Gilbert at New York’s famed Avery Fisher Hall. The concert by the Russian pianist will be accompanied by a campaign to promote Polish cultural events of 2011. As part of the production planned by the Ludwig van Beethoven Association, the New York audience will be introduced to a special issue of the Beethoven Magazine. Last year, this Polish magazine was honoured with the GrandFront 2009 award for the Cover of the Year from the Polish Press Publishers Chamber and the prestigious Stevie Award from The International Business Awards. The magazine, to be distributed during the concert at Avery Fisher Hall, gives a summary of the Chopin Competition; highlights the major Polish festivals in 2011; and presents Polish ambassadors of culture, including Wilhelm Sasnal, Marcin Maciejowski, Mariusz Kwiecień, Piotr Beczała, Piotr Uklański, Aleksandra Kurzak, and Abel Korzeniowski. The magazine’s cover features an illustration by Jakub Julian Ziółkowski, the author of the poster for the 15th Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival and at the same time the best-known Polish name in the world of art in 2010. This campaign is the first in the 169-year history of the renowned New York institution to distribute external promotional material at a subscription concert. The tenth issue of the Beethoven Magazine will be handed out by volunteers from New York’s art schools who will wear T-shirts reproducing the cover of the Polish magazine. The Chopin concerto by Yulianna Avdeeva will be heard by a 2700-person audience at Avery Fisher Hall. It is worth adding that the jubilee English-language issue of the Beethoven Magazine will be included in a package of promotional publications at Polish diplomatic posts in the USA and in a package of promotional materials of the Polish National Tourist Office North America, and will be distributed at the most prestigious cultural establishments in the USA and Canada.
The concert in New York will also provide an opportunity for Elżbieta Penderecka to continue talks with American agencies concerning joint projects promoting Polish music in 2013, the year marking the 100th birthday of Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994), the 80th birthday of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki (1933-2010) and the 80th birthday of Krzysztof Penderecki.
