Bem Ewa

Foremost Polish jazz singer

'First lady of the polish jazz’. When talking about Ewa Bem it is hard to find an original and yet adequate term. This one seems just right. There is just no comparison Ewa Bem’s vocal and concert-hall skills.
Her artistic career began in 1969 (‘Stodola’ Blues Band) but it was a year later that she truly debuted as avocalist with the Zbigniew Seifert Quartet. She won the Grand Prix at the Jazz Vocalists’ Comeptition in Lublin in 1972.
Alongside with Aleksander Bem and Andrzej Ibek Ewa Bem has created the Bemibek Band. This formation - uncommon on the polish scene – has given concerets all over Europe and has won many prestigeous prizes (‘Jazz nad Odrą’ in 1971, Opole in 1971). Going through different changes the group finaly changed its name to Bemibem. That also changed the style of the band’s music, leading it closer to jazz.
Ewa has performed with most the finest jazz musicians, such as: Marek Blizinski, Andrzej Jagodzinski, Zbigniew Jaremko, Janusz Muniaki, Zbigniew Namyslowski, The Old Timers. Her duet with Andrzej Jagodzinski opened a new path of Bem’s artistic career. Presenting the audience with american jazz standards along with a polish repertoire in original swing interpretations, they were welcomed enthusiastically both in Poland and abroad.
The year 2000 is Ewa Bem’s great come back. Her new album (2001) has highlight a new side of the artist. Ewa astonished her fans with modern and fresh arangement of a polish hit ’Podaruj mi troche slonca" as well as with excellent musical productions created together with well acclaimed performers from the young generation, such as: Kayah, Kuba Badach, Dorota Miskiewicz. The album became a great success awarding Ewa Bem with two Fryderyk Awards (Album of the Year, Vocalist of the Year).
The search for new material and the will to introduce her audience to her own versions of the old polish hits have led Ewa to another recording ‘ewa.ewa’ (2004). Kept in a similar to the previous album pop style it is once again an example of an always charismatic and alluring performance of Ewa Bem.
