Fray David

David Fray, one of Jacques Rouvier’s disciples, was awarded the 2nd Grand Prize in 2004 as well as the Prize for the best interpretation of the Canadian work (Jacques Hetu’s Impromptu who dedicated it to him) at the International Contest in Montreal. Straight after this success, he signed a contract with the Canadian label ATMA and recorded a first Liszt and Schubert recital, which will soon be out.

A highly sought after recital and concert player, he performs at many prestigious venues in Europe, America and Asia: Théâtre Mogador, Cité de la Musique (Paris), Place des Arts Montreal, Alti Hall Tokyo, etc., and airs regularly on the radio France Musiques. His reappearance at the Roque d’Anthéron International Piano Festival in the summer of 2004 produced the opportunity for a concert to be held (Wanderer-Fantasie de Schubert) which was recorded for a DVD produced by Idéale Audience in the series « the Pianos of Tomorrow ». Alain Meunier invited him regularly to his festival d’Entrecasteaux dans le Var where he dedicates himself to a chamber music repertoire with his colleagues.

Appointed « Young soloist of the year » by the Commission des Radios Publiques Francophones (CRPLF), laureate « déclic » of the AFAA (Association Française d’Action Artistique) as well as « Classical revelation of the year » by the ADAMI in 2004, David Fray performed at the Salle Gaveau (Paris), and in 2005 at the Théâtre Mogador, where he played Ravel’s concerto in G major, directed by Christoph Eschenbach.

Besides that, he has also benefited from the advice given to him by people such as Dimitri Bashkirov, Paul Badura-Skoda and Christoph Eschenbach. In January 2004, he was selected to participate in Menahem Pressler’s Masterclass at the Théâtre du Châtelet. Since January 2004, he has been laureate and therefore also grant-holder of the Banque Populaire Foundation. He has had the chance to be given advice by Pierre Boulez on the interpretation of two of his works; he will be doing a recital, in August 2006 at the Ruhr Piano Festival in Germany from the sponsorship.

He unanimously entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, into Jacques Rouvier’s class in 1999, and in 2002 he obtained his diploma with distinction in advanced training at the prize-giving recital. At the same time, he received a grant: Feydau de Brou Saint Paul, awarded each year by the jury to a student who is considered to be outstanding. In the same year in September, he was unanimously admitted to Jacques Rouvier’s class in the « Cycle de Perfectionnement », and also into further training for chamber music (trio with piano) in Christian Ivaldi and Claire Désert’s class.
