One of the fastest rising young artists of Austria, Robert Holzer studied with Prof. Gertrud Schulz at the Conservatory in Linz and with Prof. Rudolf Knoll at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. In 1985 he was the first price winner at the musical competition "young singers of Austria".
After his operatic debut at the Vienna Chamber Opera, he joined the ensemble of the opera house in Bern (Switzerland). Guest contracts with opera houses all over Europe, like for example Brussels, Madrid, Barcelona,Catania,Lisbon, Wexford, Athens or Amsterdam followed. In 1991 he had his debut at the Vienna State Opera. His repertoire includes the leading bass roles in german and italian operas like Sarastro (Magic flute), Rocco(Fidelio), Philippo (Don Carlo), Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), Kaspar (Freischütz), Mephisto (Faust), Landgraf (Tannhäuser), Gurnemanz (Parsifal) and Baron Ochs (Rosenkavalier), which brought him also to the opera houses of Buenos Aires, Metropolitan Theatre Seoul and Santiago de Chile.
From 1996 - 2000 Robert Holzer was a member of the opera house Mannheim, where he appeared regularely in all leading roles.
A big success was his König Heinrich (Lohengrin) with director Peter Konwitschny at the Liceu Barcelona and Hunding (Walküre) at Teatro Bellini in Catania. In 2005 he will appear in Salome and Ariadne auf Naxos at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo.
Mr. Holzer also has a big concert repertoire and he is invited to several international Festivals and leading concert houses. He is working with conductors like Frühbeck de Burgos, Stein, Hager, Latham-König, Adam Fischer, Cambreling, Steinberg, Welser-Möst, Zagrosek, Wallat, Märkl, Viotti, Schneider and Harnoncourt. He made his North American debut in a concert with the American Symphony Orchestra at New York's Lincoln Center. Mr. Holzer is also in frequent demand as a recitalist and his programs cover a wide range of repertoire from the Wiener Klassik to contemporary music. His work is also documented by several recordings. The most important are 9th Beethoven (Naxos), Mozart-Requiem (Koch), Magicflute (Naxos), Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln, L'Apocalypse selon St.Jean, Masses from Haydn and Mozart (Naxos) and a Lied CD with songs from Schumann, Wolf and Pfitzner (Preiser).
