Hossa Iwona

The laureate of Grand Prix at the International Maria Callas Vocal Competition in Athens in 1999 the artist is one of the best sopranos of young generation in Poland.

Born on 23 February 1973 in Poznań, she is a graduate of the Vocal and Acting Department of the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań in the vocal class of Prof. Ewa Wdowicka (graduated with honours in 1998). She has won many prizes, including third prize and the Mozart Special Prize at the 6th Ada Sari International Vocal Competition in Nowy Sącz in 1995. She was also a semi-finalist in the 34th Francesco Vinas International Vocal Competition in Barcelona (1997) and the 7th International Mozart Competition in Salzburg (1999).

She won the Grand Prix at the International Maria Callas Vocal Competition in Athens in 1999. She received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and Art in 1995, and a scholarship for young artists from the Poznań artistic community in 1998, awarded by the Poznań Art Award Commission. She has taken part in many vocal courses, including those taught by Prof. Helena Łazarska, Prof. Leopold Spitzer, Prof. Jerzy Marchwiński, Ewa Podleś, Sylwia Geszty and Ryszard Karczykowski. While still a student, she debuted in 1996 as Violetta in the premiere performance of Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata" at the Wielki Theatre in Poznań.

She has been a soloist of Poznań's Wielki Theatre since 1996, and her repertoire there includes Hanna in "The Haunted Manor" and Zuzia in "Verbum Nobile" by Moniuszko, Rosina in The "Barber of Seville", Philippe in Penderecki's "The Devils of Loudun", and Norina in Donizetti's "Don Pasquale". She also works with the Szczecin Opera, where she has sung the part of Constance in Mozart's "The Abduction From the Seraglio", for which she received the Amber Ring award in 1998. She has twice taken part in the Bydgoszcz Opera Festival ("La Traviata" in 1997 and "The Abduction From the Seraglio" in 1998), in the opera festival in Carcassonne in France (1999), and the Wexford Opera Festival in Ireland (2000).

She was the finalist of "Orfeo 2000" International Vocal Competition in Hannover. She also took part in Rossini Festival in Pesaro (Italy, 2000). She has also given several recitals and numerous philharmonic, oratorio and cantata, and chamber concerts. At the Grand Theatre in Warsaw, she debuted in the part of Violetta in Verdi's "La Traviata". In February 2001, she sang the part of Hanna in a Grand Theatre - National Opera production of Moniuszko's "Haunted Manor" directed by Mikołaj Grabowski and in December 2002 the part of Donna Anna in Mozart's "Don Giovanni".

In 2004 she received the Andrzej Hiolski Award for the best female role in National Opera in Warsaw.
