Born in Seoul/Korea in 1973 Attila Jun began his studies at the Seoul National University with Philip Kang and came to Germany on spring 1998 to complete his studies at the Musikhochschule Cologne with Hans Sotin. In the years 1995 - 1997 he was the winner of three singing competitions at Korea. In 1997 he also got an award at the International Belvedere Competition in Vienna as well as at the Re Manfredi Competition in Italy.
In Korea Attila Jun started at the early age of 21 years to sing roles such as Sarastro in 1994, Filippo in 1995, Colline in 1996 and Daland in 1997. Furthermore he was singing concerts of Händel’s MESSIAH in Vancouver and took part at a gala-concert in Baden-Baden in 1997.
The young artist made his opera debut in Europe on October 1998 singing the role of Sparafucile / Rigoletto at the Staatstheater Stuttgart, where he got an engagement for three years from the season 1999/2000 on. There he’ll also sing in the coming season Timur / Turandot, Eremit / Freischütz and Fafner / Siegfried just to name a few.
After having heard Attila Jun in summer 1998 Maestro Giuseppe Sinopoli asked Attila Jun to sing the role of Hunding in a concert version of WALKÜRE at the Opera of Rome, a project which turned out to be a very big success for the artist on March 1999.
Just a few weeks later Attila Jun made his debut singing the same role at the Théatre du Capitole in Toulouse with Pinchas Steinberg conducting. Since then he has also performed with that part at the Staatstheater Stuttgart (DVD-recording in 2003) as well as at the Wagner Festival in Wels. Under the direction of Antonio Pappano the artist made his debut at the Bayreuther Festspiele in 1999 singing 3. Edler in a new production of Lohengrin. He later overtook additionally the part of Nachtwächter / Meistersinger under Christian Thielemann.
In 2001 he sang concerts of Verdi Requiem in Hamburg, Madrid and Barcelona with Christoph Eschenbach conducting. In autumn 2002 he acclaimed a great success giving his USA debut at the San Francisco Opera with Timur.
In spring 2003 Attila Jun performed at the Großes Festspielhaus in Salzburg with Puccini’s Messa di Gloria and Rossini’s Stabat Mater as well as at the Wagner Festival in Wels with Fafner in Siegfried.
October 2003 brought him back to San Fancisco singing the part of Il Grande Inquisitore / Don Carlo with enormous success. He has already been reinvited for a new production of Norma / Oroveso in the 2005/2006 season.
In 2004 the artist made his sensational debut at la Scala di Milano with the part of Daland. In the same year he also sang his role debuts as Sarastro and Marke at the Staatstheater Stuttgart.
2005 already brought his return to La Scala with his debut as Landgraf in Tannhäuser under the baton of Jeffrey Tate.
2005 and 2006 years’ projects include Zauberflöte at the Teatro Real in Madrid (July 2005), a new production of Der Fliegende Holländer at the Wels Wagner Festival (June 2006) and Don Giovanni / Commendatore at the Klangbogen in Vienna (July 2006). In a new RING production at the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp with Ivan Törsz conducting the artist will first sing the part of Hunding (February 2007), later be followed by his first Hagen in 2008.
For Deutsche Grammophon Attila Jun has recorded the part of Holsteiner in Friedenstag by Richard Strauss with the Dresdner Staatskapelle under the baton of Giuseppe Sinopoli.
