
After studying church music, Lioba Braun was educated in singing by Prof. Charlotte Lehmann. Two years later, the mezzo soprano already won prizes in great national and international singing competitions.
Lioba Braun began her career at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, being a member of the ensemble from 1987 to 1989. In 1989 she became a member of the Vienna Volksoper, in 1991/92 she changed to the Vienna State Opera, being a member of the ensemble for two years, where she was to be seen together with Hildegard Behrens and Placido Domingo in Christoph von Dohnanyis RING- production. Since 1993 Lioba Braun regularly appeared in major roles such as Fricka, Venus, Carmen, Dalila, Azucena, Geschwitz and Brangäne at the State Theatre of Mannheim.
Her tremendous success as Brangäne in Mannheim brought her the invitation for interpreting this role under the baton of Daniel Barenboim at the Bayreuth Festival in 1994. In the same year followed her debut at La Scala with Riccardo Muti’s new Ring production.
In 1999 Lioba Braun appeared once more at the Bayreuth Festival as Brangäne together with Waltraud Meier and Siegfried Jerusalem awarding her high acclaim both from audience and critics.
In 1999/2000 Lioba Braun had a huge success with her debut as Kundry in Mannheim.
Recent engagements were leading her to the State Opera of Berlin for Mahler’s 8th Symphony and Brangäne / Tristan under Barenboim, to the Opera of Rome for Götterdämmerung, Semperoper Dresden (Venus), Vienna State Opera (Rheingold / Fricka), Stuttgart (Fricka / Walküre), Tokyo as Brangäne with the Berlin Philharmonics under Claudio Abbado, and Accademia Sta. Cecilia in Rome with Schönberg´s Gurrelieder under the baton of Maestro Chung. In Dresden she sang Alt-Rhapsodie under Giuseppe Sinopoli, in Berlin concerts with Claudio Abbado (Mendelssohn Lobgesang) and in Munich Mahler´s Lied Von Der Erde under Lorin Maazel.
Engagements of the past seasons were among others Brangäne / Tristan at Accademia Sta. Cecilia Rome under Myun Whun Chung, Fremde Fürstin / Rusalka at Schleswig Holstein Musik Festival under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach, and her debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper in the role of Ortrud / Lohengrin.
Future engagements include among others Parsifal in Naples, Tristan und Isolde in Los Angeles, Tannhäuser in Madrid, as well as concerts in Vienna, Bamberg, Warsaw, Munich and Berlin.
