Born in Cornwall, England, in 1952, he began his career with the Royal Marines’ Band at the age of 16. Additional study followed at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he remained briefly until being appointed to principal horn with the Scottish National Orchestra, at the age of 22. He returned to London in 1979 to take a post by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, followed by appointments in the renowned Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, the English Chamber Orchestra, and Nash Ensemble. Currently, Lloyd is successor to the legendary horn soloist, Hermann Baumann, as professor of horn, at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, Germany. Travelling extensively as a soloist, a teaching professor, and a guest musician, Frank Lloyd is not only a player but a performer. His ability to balance a formidable technique with an innate musical sensitivity has gained him a distinguished reputation respected worldwide.
