Stefańska Elżbieta

She learned to play the piano with her father, Professor Ludwik Stefański. She studied the harpsichord with Professor Hans Pischner from Berlin at the State Higher School of Music in Kraków. She took part in the international courses in Siena and Weimar with such masters as Zuzanna Ruzickova and Guggiero Gerlin. In 1964, she received two first prizes at the Old Music Competition in Łódź (piano and harpsichord). In 1965, she was awarded the first prize at the International Music Competition in Geneva, where she also received the Henri Ghez Award for the best harpsichord player of the competition.
Together with the flutist B. Świątek and the cellist J. Klocek, she created the Baroque Trio which has gained high recognition, e.g. received the Award of the City of Kraków.
In her solo and chamber repertoire, she has appeared both in Poland and – even more frequently – abroad, mainly in European countries but also in Japan, South Korea and China. Her repertoire also comprises works written since the Renaissance, including works of Polish composers both old and contemporary. In the decade 1991-2001, she gave concerts with her mother, Halina Czerny-Stefańska, the duo performing works written since classicism.
She takes active part in the jury of music concerts both in Poland and abroad, e.g. of the International Harpsichord Competition in Munich (1970), the International Bach Competition in Leipzig (1972), the International Harpsichord Competition in Warsaw (1973), the International Guitar Competition in Kraków (1986, 1987), the International Piano Competition in Taipei (1990, Taiwan).
She runs the harpsichord class at the Academy of Music in Kraków, where she is Professor and Head of the Chair of Harpsichord and Old Instruments. In 1985, she organized the First Wanda Landowska Harpsichord Competition in Kraków and also headed the jury. Since 1996, she has been in charge of Johann Sebastian Bach Days in Kraków, which consist in performances of the Master’s works on old instruments.
The artist has made many radio, television and disc recordings, e.g. 18 Sonatas for Pianoforte by W.A. Mozart and 6 French Suites by J.S. Bach for Pony Canyon (Tokyo). She has also recorded works for Polskie Nagrania (Bach, Scarlatti), EMI (Bach, Penderecki), Dux (Bach concerts, a Fryderyk Award nomination), Cosmo (17th and 18th century French music).
