Founded in 1955, the Jyväskylä City Orchestra has 37 players and the chain of its predecessors stretches back to 1949.
From the 1.8.2003 the Jyväskylä Sinfonia have three conductors. The artistic director is the French flautist Patrick Gallois and the two other new conductors are Ulf Söderblom and Juhani Raiskinen. In addition to its regular symphony concerts, the Jyväskylä Sinfonia has toured widely in Finland with such illustrious soloists as Karita Mattila, Viktoria Mullova, Yehudi Menuhin and Ruggiero Ricci and has also made light music tours with front row Finnish artists. In autumn 2000 the orchestra toured Japan and in summer 2003 the orchestra toured France.
For some years now, the Jyväskylä Sinfonia has been appearing at various summer festivals, of which the opening concert of the Jyväskylä Arts Festival has become a tradition. Jyväskylä Sinfonia collaborates closely with the Jyväskylä Opera, with the latest performances in the winter of 2002-2003 were Cavalleria Rusticana and Pajazzo.
The record company Ondine published the orchestra's Lauluja merelle ("Songs to the sea”). The songs are composed by Lasse Martenson and performed by the internationally acclaimed Finnish opera singer, soprano Karita Mattila. Last year the Jyväskylä Sinfonia and Ondine published a first recording of the famous Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara's opera Aleksis Kivi.
