Founded in 1946, the Wiener Kammerorchester quickly became one of the best chamber orchestras in the world. The ensemble's long term cooperation with Sándor Végh cut short by the artist's death in 1997, had a tremendous effect on them. The orchestra has worked with numerous distinguished composers including Andreas Schiff, Adam Fischer, Sir Neville Marriner, Jordi Savall and Peter Schreier; singers and soloists such as Cecilia Bartoli, Teresa Berganza, Rudolf Buchbinder, Gianluca Cascioli, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Reinhold Friedrich, Helene Grimaud, Friedrich and Paul Gulda, Clemens Hagen, Lynn Harrell, Kiri Te Kanawa, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Oleg Maisenberg, Viktoria Mullova, Gianandrea Noseda, Emmanuel Pahud, Thomas Quasthoff, Julian Rachlin, Janine Jansen, Vadim Repin, Maxim Vengerov, Richard Stoltzman, Stefan Vladar and Thomas Zehetmair.
The Wiener KammerOrchester gives regular performances at the Vienna Konzerthaus, participates in the well known cycle of Symphonie Classique, and hosts the participants of the International Prize-winner Series competition introducing the winners to the audience in Vienna. However, the orchestra acquired its international reputation thanks to their typical “Viennese sound” in performing the great Viennese classics.
