TAIKO
based on “Esugata Nyōbō” (“Portrait of a Wife”) is a Japanese folktale that has been influenced by foreign folklore. A feudal lord accidentally obtained a painting of a beautiful wife in the village. The wife was kidnapped for her beauty. She retained her virtue and became known as the woman without a smile. To save her, her husband came to the castle dressed as a vendor. He successfully retrieved his wife, taking advantage of dimwittedness of the feudal lord.
Higaki Ballet Company from Kyoto presents sophisticated Japanese ballet, mixing the world of ancient Japanese Noh theatre, literature and legends with modern dance forms. The ballet has received many awards such as the Grand Prix of National Art Festival 2004 by Agency for Cultural Affairs Japan. Higaki Ballet Company has got great reviews in Asia, New Zeland and Germany where it performed during Asia Pacific Week Berlin2005
