Poland in Pulse – Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival

“Poland in Pulse” is the motto of this year’s, 25th jubilee Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. The programme invites to discover Poland’s rich musicscape. Eminent Polish soloists, orchestras, conductors, composers, and also the young, rising talents will present music ranging from Baroque to avant-garde, works of Chopin and jazz, great symphonic works, and klezmer music.
The programme of such a festival must simply encompass a concert with Krzysztof Penderecki, one of the most eminent representatives of Polish 20th- and 21st-century music. His Polish Requiem will be performed on 14th August, at the beautiful Baroque St Michaelis Church in Hamburg.
Each part of the Polish Requiem is devoted to a person or event associated with the last few decades of Polish history. Lacrimosa is dedicated to the victims of December 1970, the first part of the Dies irae sequence – to the Warsaw Uprising, and the second – to St Maximilian Kolbe, Agnus Dei – to Cardinal Wyszyński, Libera me – to the victims of Katyń. The last element, Chaconne commemorates John Paul II, and was composed after the death of the Polish Pope.
The NDR Radiophilharmonie Orchestra and the Warsaw Philharmonic Choir will be conducted by the composer himself, and the solo parts will be performed by Izabella Kłosińska, Agnieszka Rehlis, Angelo Antonio Poli, and Piotr Nowacki.
